Firmus lands OpenAI deal for Malaysian data centres

Firmus’ deal to sell computing capacity to ChatGPT maker OpenAI from two planned data centres in Malaysia is not substantial enough to win over sceptical investors, with some flagging escrow arrangements remaining a key concern ahead of a float that would value the artificial intelligence infrastructure start-up at at least $15.5 billion.

Firmus – which leases data centres in Melbourne and Singapore and is building its own centres in Tasmania, South Australia and Indonesia – said Open AI would become an anchor customer for two new sites in Malaysia. It declined to provide details of the arrangement with OpenAI, including when the Malaysian sites would start operating or how much power they would consume.
