George Mason University has entered into a strategic hardware partnership with Oxford-based quantum infrastructure firm TreQ to deploy an open-architecture quantum computer at its Northern Virginia campus. Supported by catalytic funding from the Virginia Innovation Partnership Corporation (VIPC) alongside university capital, the $7.7 million system will represent the first U.S. deployment of TreQ’s proprietary Open Architecture Quantum (OAQ) framework, serving the National Capital Region’s defense, government, and commercial deep-tech ecosystems.

Unlike monolithic quantum computing platforms that permanently bind users to a single physical qubit modality or proprietary control stack, TreQ’s Open Architecture Quantum (OAQ) system provides a modular, “built-to-evolve” physical and software enclosure:

  • Interchangeable Stack Elements: Allows researchers, defense contractors, and startups to integrate and evaluate different quantum processing units (QPUs), control electronics, cryogenic routing systems, and software compilers within a single standardized enclosure as components mature.
  • Supply Chain Testing Bed: Designed to act as an open hardware testbed for third-party component vendors, enabling rapid prototyping across the entire quantum technology stack without requiring single-vendor integration lock-in.
  • Operational Management: TreQ will design, deploy, and manage the system’s day-to-day operations while co-developing interdisciplinary research and training curricula with George Mason faculty.
