Google’s A2A protocol has formally joined the Agentic AI Foundation (AAIF), a move that brings the two most significant open standards for the agent economy under a single governance umbrella. The transfer, announced by the Linux Foundation-directed body on August 20, 2026, places A2A alongside Anthropic’s Model Context Protocol (MCP) in a neutral ecosystem backed by every major cloud provider and model lab.

Consolidating the Protocol Layer
The significance of this consolidation lies in the structural separation of concerns. While both are agent-centric protocols, they operate at different layers of the stack. MCP, donated by Anthropic as a founding project, focuses on the vertical integration between agents and tools. It standardizes how a model accesses local resources, search results, or enterprise databases. A2A, originally developed by Google, handles the horizontal communication between agents—specifically how two autonomous systems negotiate tasks, exchange identity credentials, and maintain state across organizational boundaries.
By bringing both into the AAIF, the industry is signaling that the era of proprietary, siloed agent protocols is ending. The foundation, which grew from 49 founding members to more than 250 in less than a year, now hosts a shared protocol stack that allows developers to build agents that are inherently interoperable. As noted in the AAIF’s structural breakdown, “Where A2A fits is at the collaborative edge; where MCP fits is at the tool integration edge.” Together, they form the plumbing for what analysts call the agentic AI economy.
