Every September, Apple launches a new iPhone. And every September, crypto Twitter does the same math: how many Bitcoin does it take to buy one? For years, the answer kept shrinking — a straight line toward irrelevance. In 2011, an iPhone cost 162 BTC. By 2025, it was 0.007 BTC. The narrative wrote itself: Bitcoin keeps going up, iPhones stay roughly the same price, and holding crypto beats holding cash. Then 2026 happened, and the math broke.

The Numbers That Tell the Story
Here’s the Bitcoin cost of a base-level iPhone at each launch:
| Year | iPhone Model | USD Price | BTC Price at Launch | Cost in BTC |
| 2011 | iPhone 4S | $199* | ~$3.50 | 162.25 BTC |
| 2016 | iPhone 7 | $649 | ~$528 | 1.23 BTC |
| 2020 | iPhone 12 | $799 | ~$11,400 | 0.070 BTC |
| 2023 | iPhone 15 | $799 | ~$27,200 | 0.029 BTC |
| 2024 | iPhone 16 | $799 | ~$57,000 | 0.014 BTC |
| 2025 | iPhone 17 | $799 | ~$114,000 | 0.007 BTC |
| 2026 | iPhone 18 Pro | $1,199 | ~$79,000 | 0.016 BTC |
*Contract-subsidized pricing

The trendline is dramatic: a 99.4% decline in Bitcoin cost from 2016 to 2025. But the 2026 row is the one that disrupts the pattern. The iPhone 18 Pro costs more than double the Bitcoin of last year’s base model — 0.016 BTC vs 0.007 BTC.
Why 2026 Is Different
Two things happened simultaneously:
Bitcoin’s price dropped. At last September’s iPhone 17 launch, Bitcoin traded near $114,000 — riding a wave of ETF inflows and institutional adoption that had pushed it to an all-time high of $126,198 in October 2025. Today, BTC sits around $79,000. That’s a roughly 38% decline from the peak, driven by a combination of geopolitical tensions, ETF outflows, and rising inflation.
