From automated HVAC systems to predictive maintenance, we’ve spent the last decade hooking everything up to the cloud to make our buildings smarter, greener, and incredibly efficient. But we rarely talk about the catch: the hardware platforms running our buildings like edge controllers and access gateways routinely stay in service for 15 to 20 years.

That massive lifespan is about to crash headfirst into the biggest cybersecurity shift of our generation: the arrival of quantum computing. If you think quantum threats are a sci-fi problem for the 2030s, it’s time to check your watch. Shifting to Post-Quantum Cryptography (PQC) is an immediate design priority for anyone buying, installing, or managing building technology today.

Fortunately, the solutions aren’t theoretical. The National Institute of Standards and Technology finalized the standards, and commercial technology leaders like Google Chrome already deployed quantum-resistant key exchanges to protect web traffic. PropTech environments need to follow suit.
