Iowa regulators say they have recovered more than $3 million in cryptocurrency stolen from an older Iowan, wrapping up a financial exploitation case that investigators say began in December 2025. The recovery, announced out of Des Moines, hinged on fast coordination between state fraud investigators, local police, federal agents and private blockchain specialists before the stolen funds could disappear for good.

According to a press release from the Iowa Insurance Division, the case started when a securities broker-dealer flagged the scam to the division's financial exploitation unit, as reported by Oskaloosa News. From there, the division's Fraud Bureau says it used rapid interagency action and specialized blockchain tracing to locate and secure the assets before they could be permanently cashed out.

Iowa Insurance Commissioner Doug Ommen framed the recovery as proof that no single agency can handle these cases alone, saying crypto operations like this one require outside partners to track money that moves fast and far. The Fraud Bureau says it coordinated with the Ankeny Police Department, the FBI, the Polk County Attorney's Office and private blockchain specialists to pull off the recovery, and it specifically credited the FBI's Virtual Assets Unit, the Polk County Attorney's Office, the Ankeny Police Department and Jesse Gossman of The Block Audit LLC for their cooperation and swift action.
