Crypto News

Consensys has

launched

the MetaMask Card across the United States, making the Mastercard-enabled self-custodial spending card available in 49 states for the first time, excluding only the state of Vermont. The card was previously piloted in the United Kingdom and European Union in 2024 and has since expanded to Argentina, Brazil, Canada, European Economic Area countries, Mexico, Switzerland, and the U.K. ahead of the U.S. general rollout.

The card is issued by Cross River Bank, an FDIC-insured institution, and built in partnership with regulated card issuer Monavate, formerly known as Baanx, and Mastercard's global payments network. It works at approximately 150 million Mastercard merchants worldwide and is compatible with Apple Pay and Google Pay.

A core feature is self-custody: users retain control of their digital assets inside their MetaMask wallet until the moment of purchase. Consensys said this distinguishes the card from most custodial crypto cards, which require users to pre-load funds onto an exchange account before spending.

Standard cardholders receive a virtual card by default and earn 1% cashback on purchases. The cashback is paid in mUSD, MetaMask's Ethereum-based stablecoin issued by Bridge, a Stripe-owned platform, and minted through M0's decentralized infrastructure. Consensys describes mUSD as backed 1:1 by high-quality, liquid dollar-equivalent assets.

A premium tier, the MetaMask Metal Card, is available as a $199 annual subscription and provides a physical card with 3% cashback on the first $10,000 spent per year, no foreign transaction fees, higher spending and ATM withdrawal limits, travel discounts through Entravel, and access to exclusive events.

Mastercard's global head of digital commercialization, Sherri Haymond, said MetaMask "shares our vision of empowering people to spend their crypto securely and seamlessly, anywhere Mastercard is accepted in the world." Consensys opened a U.S. waiting list for the card in March 2025.

MetaMask staff product manager Ale Machado said the firm's primary measure of success is the card becoming part of users' daily routines, with U.S. users "spending from their self-custodial wallet without friction, without thinking about the crypto underneath." Crypto-native payment cards have seen daily transaction volumes rise since December 2024, according to Consensys, though it did not provide specific figures.
