Director of National Intelligence Jay Clayton was selected to lead the new government initiative that will work with consumers, public interest groups, religious organizations, critical infrastructure providers, and AI companies, President Donald Trump explained when announcing the appointment.

What they're saying:

The task force is designed to coordinate the federal government’s effort "to ensure that America continues to lead the World in Super Intelligence, which many say is bigger than the Industrial Revolution, and the Internet, and will protect the interests, and improve the lives, of all Americans," Trump wrote in a post on social media Sunday, using his preferred term for artificial intelligence.

Why this matters

Placing the national intelligence chief at the center of a federal AI task force signals that AI policy is being treated as a national-security and critical-infrastructure issue, not solely a technology matter. The initiative could influence how AI companies, infrastructure providers and federal agencies coordinate on future safeguards and deployment standards.
