Yahoo lost three billion accounts in 2013. Aadhaar had its own reckoning in 2018. Alibaba followed a year later. None of those breaches had anything to do with quantum computers, but they’re a reminder of how quickly secure data can stop being secure, and how much damage follows when it does.
Quantum cybersecurity is a newer version of that same worry. It’s the field concerned with how quantum computing changes the security of digital systems, and it covers two connected things. The threat that quantum computers pose to the encryption protecting nearly everything online, and the defenses being developed to keep that protection intact as the technology advances. No quantum computer today can actually break that encryption. Security teams are planning for it anyway, and for good reason.
