Metaplanet spent $222 million on 2,823 Bitcoin (BTC) in the second quarter, lifting its treasury to 43,000 BTC] even as its buying pace slowed sharply.

Key Points:

  • Metaplanet paid an average of $78,608 per coin for its second-quarter Bitcoin purchases, well below its overall cost basis.
  • The 43,000 BTC treasury now sits just behind Twenty One Capital among the largest corporate holders.
  • The company still targets 100,000 BTC by year-end, a goal requiring roughly 57,000 more coins in six months.

Metaplanet Bitcoin Purchase Details

The Tokyo-listed company disclosed the purchase on Jul. 2, saying it spent 35.9 billion yen, roughly $222 million, over the three months through June at an average of $78,608 per coin. Its entire stack has cost 659.2 billion yen, about $4.07 billion, since buying began. That works out to roughly $94,792 per Bitcoin, far above where the asset trades today.

The quarter also produced close to $10.9 million in revenue from the company's Bitcoin Income Generation program, an operation that sells options against coins it already holds rather than leaving the treasury idle. First-half revenue from the segment reportedly reached about $29.3 million.

The pace of that buying is cooling fast, though.

Metaplanet added 17,473 BTC in the third quarter of 2025, then purchases shrank to 4,279 BTC in the fourth quarter and 5,075 BTC in the first three months of this year. The latest haul is the smallest in more than a year. Investors shrugged anyway, and shares climbed 3.5 percent to 207 yen, about $1.28, in Tokyo on Thursday.

Bitcoin Targets and LeClair Outlook

The new total leaves Metaplanet just behind Twenty One Capital, which holds roughly 43,514 BTC, in the race among the biggest public holders after runaway leader Strategy. Chief executive Simon Gerovich still wants 100,000 BTC by the end of this year and 210,000 BTC by the end of 2027, targets the company funds through equity raises, debt and warrant issuances.

Dylan LeClair, the company's director of Bitcoin strategy, argued last week that current conditions resemble the bottoms of earlier bear markets. "This is what the bottom looks like," he said, pointing to the large share of supply held by long-term investors. Bitcoin fell about 20 percent during the quarter, sliding from $73,580 to $58,558 before recovering toward $60,400 on Thursday, a slump that leaves the treasury underwater against its average cost.

Metaplanet held fewer than 100 BTC when it pivoted to a treasury strategy in April 2024, then built the position to 1,761 coins by December of that year and 35,102 by the end of 2025. Holdings hit 40,177 after the first quarter, a stretch in which the firm also agreed to buy bond brokerage Siiibo Securities for roughly $13 million to develop Bitcoin-linked yield products in Japan, deepening its push beyond simple accumulation.
