A cryptography research firm has outlined a way to bring private, Zcash-style transfers to Bitcoin without touching the network's consensus rules, a design that sidesteps the years-long debate over protocol changes while raising fresh questions about how much anonymity a brand-new system can actually deliver.

The 56-page proposal, published September 24 by Alloc Init researchers Clara Shikhelman, Mikhail Komarov and Aleksei Moskvin, describes a metaprotocol called Shielded Bitcoin that would hide senders, recipients and amounts by treating Bitcoin as little more than a bulletin board. Instead of asking miners or nodes to enforce privacy rules, the system relies on separate software called indexers to verify zero-knowledge proofs, reject double spends and rebuild the shielded state from data posted to the blockchain.
The architecture borrows heavily from Zcash, the privacy-focused cryptocurrency that has spent a decade refining its shielded pool. Value in Shielded Bitcoin would be held as encrypted notes, each transfer would carry a proof that the sender controls the notes being spent and that inputs and outputs balance, and public markers called nullifiers would let indexers flag reused funds without revealing which note was consumed.
