Canada’s Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions, or OSFI, said tokenized deposits will be treated the same under the law as traditional bank deposits.
OSFI said the underlying technology of a financial product or service does not determine that product’s legal character.

Bitcoin.com reported on September 12 that the Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions, or OSFI, said in a recent statement that the underlying technology used in a financial product or service does not determine its legal character. OSFI added that tokenized deposits are not legally distinct from conventional deposits.

Tokenized deposits are digital tokens representing deposits held in bank accounts that can be used on blockchain and other distributed ledger technology, or DLT, platforms.

OSFI said it plans to apply the same financial regulations that govern existing deposits rather than create a separate regulatory framework for tokenized deposits.
