Neutral-atom quantum computing developer Oratomic has secured $775 million in cumulative funding, according to Quantum Computing Report. The funding is intended to support research and development toward a fault-tolerant quantum computing system.

Neutral-atom approaches use individual atoms as quantum bits, or qubits. The atoms can be controlled with light and arranged in programmable configurations, making the technology one of several hardware paths being pursued for quantum computing.

Fault tolerance is a major goal across the quantum sector because quantum states are susceptible to errors from noise and other disruptions. Building fault-tolerant systems generally requires hardware, control methods and error-correction capabilities that can operate reliably at scale. Oratomic’s reported funding total signals continued investment in efforts to develop that capability using neutral atoms.

Liquid-crystal-like magnetism explains puzzling properties in a rare-earth compound

In some materials, physical properties don't emerge from their individual particles, but from the collective behavior of their quantum spins. Now, researchers led by Pengcheng Dai at Rice University in the U.S. have discovered that in one compound containing the rare-earth element ytterbium, these spins can behave much like the molecules in a liquid crystal: favoring a certain direction without lining up to create magnetism on larger scales.
