Mason County sheriff warns of jury duty warrant scam pushing Bitcoin payments

MASON COUNTY, Mich., (WPBN/WGTU) -- The Mason County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents in the area of scam calls that are circulating in the county.

The sheriff’s office said the caller claims that the person they are talking to has an active warrant for missing jury duty.

The caller then tells the person they are trying to scam to go to Hart to pay at a location used as a Bitcoin machine.

The sheriff’s office is telling those who may receive the scam call not to send money or provide financial information.

According to the sheriff’s office, a demand for payment through Bitcoin is a scam.

The sheriff’s office asks that if the caller claims to be an officer that you ask for their name and badge number, then hang up and contact the Mason/Oceana Central Dispatch directly to verify their identity.

When calling dispatch, the sheriff’s office said not to call using the phone number the caller gives you and to call dispatch directly at 231-869-5858.
