Natalie Brunell, board member at Semler Scientific and Bitcoin strategy lead, raises the question of how many people self-custody their Bitcoin.

She points to statistics that show less than 50% of holders self-custody their coins, with groupings under 10%, between 10-25%, and 25-50%, indicating a majority may rely on third-party solutions.

Brunell previously questioned the safety of crypto self-custody following a ColdCard hack, where more than 10,000 coins were reportedly sent to exchanges, as reported in a prior article. She also publicly asked the FBI director whether the agency is investigating the ColdCard hacks that led to over 1,300 stolen bitcoins, covered in another report. These incidents have kept investor attention on the risks and practices surrounding Bitcoin custody.
