Term Finance, an Ethereum-based fixed-rate lending platform, has confirmed a security breach that drained approximately $8.5 million in digital assets from one of its vaults. The exploit, first reported by The Block, targeted the platform’s Term Vault and resulted in the loss of 2,843 ETH (worth roughly $6.9 million) and 1.68 million USDC. The stolen USDC was subsequently swapped for DAI, according to on-chain data.
Details of the Exploit
The attack occurred on [insert date if known, otherwise say ‘recently’], and Term Finance’s team has stated that they are actively investigating the incident. In a brief statement, the protocol acknowledged the hack and promised to release further details once their investigation is complete. The exact method of the exploit has not yet been disclosed, but such incidents typically involve vulnerabilities in smart contract logic, flash loan attacks, or compromised admin keys.
Term Finance is known for its fixed-rate, fixed-term lending model, which is designed to offer more predictable interest rates compared to variable-rate DeFi protocols. This exploit highlights the persistent risks that even well-established DeFi platforms face, especially as they handle significant liquidity.
