Coinbase launches crypto derivatives trading for Canadian investors

The initial offering covers 23 perpetual and dated futures contracts tied to major digital assets including Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Solana, as well as five commodity futures contracts (gold, silver, and oil) and an index future based on Coinbase's COIN50 index. Contracts are nano-sized and carry up to 10x leverage, with promotional pricing set at 0.02 per cent per trade plus $0.11 per contract.

A maturing market

The launch underscores the scale of what has, until now, been largely an offshore activity for Canadian investors.

According to Coinbase, global crypto derivatives trading volume is approximately 4.4 times that of spot trading, a ratio that signals where institutional appetite increasingly sits.

Bank of Canada data cited by the company also notes that one-third of publicly listed Canadian non-financial corporations already use derivatives to hedge their earnings, suggesting there is a ready constituency for regulated crypto hedging tools.

Eric Richmond, Country Director and CEO of Coinbase Canada, and Vinayak Doraiswamy, Head of Product at Coinbase Financial Markets, described the move as part of a broader effort to mature Canada's digital asset infrastructure and bring activity that has been occurring in less regulated offshore environments onto a domestic, regulated platform.
