Nearly 200 people were reportedly placed under observation after a laboratory worker in Irkutsk died of suspected plague. Russian authorities have attributed the death to pneumonia of unknown origin and denied a laboratory accident.
If the situation escalated, Bitcoin (CRYPTO: $BTC) could initially behave more like a risk asset than a safe haven, Ryan Kirkley, CEO of Global Settlement Network (GSN), told Cryptoprowl.
He added that the March 2020 market crash offers a precedent. As COVID-19 spread globally, Bitcoin plunged from around $7,900 to below $4,000 in roughly 36 hours, while Ether (CRYPTO: $ETH) lost more than half its value. Spot trading volumes surged and leveraged positions were liquidated across crypto markets.
A similar shock today could produce a 15% to 25% Bitcoin decline in a regional escalation scenario, potentially pushing BTC from around $84,000 to between $63,000 and $72,000. Ethereum could fall toward $1,900-$2,200.
"A global health shock on the scale of March 2020 is the tail risk: a 40-50% fall would put Bitcoin near $42,000-$50,000 and Ethereum, which fell harder in 2020, near $1,050-$1,300, with volume of $100 billion or more a day and liquidations that could rival the roughly $19 billion seen in October 2025," Kirkley said.
