Madisonville police warn public of rise in Bitcoin, jury duty scams

MADISONVILLE, Ky. (WFIE) - Madisonville Police Department officials are warning the public of a recent increase in scam reports, including scams involving Bitcoin and cryptocurrency and “missed grand jury” schemes.

According to a press release, people involved in these scams may be contacted by someone claiming to be a law enforcement officer, court official or government representative.

Officials say the caller may threaten arrest, fines or other legal consequences and demand immediate payment, often through Bitcoin, cryptocurrency, gift cards or other difficult-to-trace methods.

Police want to remind the public that legitimate law enforcement and court officials will not demand payment through Bitcoin, cryptocurrency, gift cards or similar methods to prevent your arrest or resolve a legal matter.

If you receive a suspicious call, message or request for payment, slow down, do not send money and verify the information through an official source.
