A new SEC unit will target accounting fraud and financial reporting violations, potentially increasing scrutiny of digital-asset firms subject to securities laws.
The US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has established a Financial Reporting and Accounting Unit within its Enforcement Division to investigate accounting fraud, financial reporting violations and misconduct involving accountants and auditors.
Led by Timothy Zimmerman, the unit brings together legal and accounting specialists as the SEC rebuilds dedicated enforcement expertise. Its creation forms part of the regulator’s broader ‘back to basics’ approach, which prioritises accounting and disclosure fraud, insider trading, market manipulation, and other established securities-law violations.
The announcement comes after accounting and auditing enforcement activity fell sharply in 2025. Cornerstone Research recorded only ten related SEC actions, representing a 68% annual decline and the lowest level in nine years.
The unit does not have a crypto-specific mandate. However, digital-asset businesses within the SEC’s jurisdiction could face greater scrutiny when reporting crypto holdings, custody arrangements, token-related revenue and other material financial risks.
