Bitstamp is the plainest exchange on this list, with no native token, no rewards card and no sprawling ecosystem. For a beginner who wants to buy crypto without extra distractions, that simplicity is the appeal.

The exchange has operated since 2011, making it, alongside Kraken, one of the two oldest platforms still running today. Bitstamp built its reputation on regulatory compliance rather than product breadth. It holds a New York BitLicense and authorization under the European Union's Markets in Crypto-Assets framework, plus registrations across the United Kingdom. In 2025, Robinhood acquired Bitstamp outright, and the exchange now operates under the "Bitstamp by Robinhood" brand while continuing to serve its existing European and U.K. customer base.

That regulatory focus comes with a narrower coin list than most competitors offer, typically cited at somewhere around 80 to 100 digital assets. Kraken and Binance, by comparison, list several hundred. Fees follow a maker-taker structure starting around 0.30 percent and 0.40 percent for monthly volume under $10,000, falling toward zero for high-volume traders. The platform's Instant Buy option, though, carries a steeper markup than placing an order on the main order book. Fiat deposits and withdrawals are a genuine strength: Bitstamp supports SEPA transfers in Europe, Faster Payments in the U.K. and ACH and wire transfers in the U.S., all of which tend to be cheaper and faster than card-based funding.
