Why Attacks Are Increasing
The main reason is the rapid spread of digital assets. Cryptocurrency has become a mainstream tool, and with it, criminals’ interest in exchanges, wallets, and services through which users store and transfer assets—including Bitcoin—has grown.
Last year’s statistics were heavily influenced by a major hack of the Bybit crypto exchange, which accounted for more than half of all losses. In 2026, the total amount of damage is lower, but attacks themselves are happening much more frequently.
Information security expert and Phishman CEO Alexey Gorelkin links the rise in incidents to the fact that the crypto market has not yet accumulated the same level of protection experience as the traditional banking sector.
Alexey Gorelkin, information security expert and CEO of Phishman: “Digital assets, including cryptocurrency, have become very widespread. Banks protect money extremely seriously because they have been under attack for decades. But crypto exchanges and crypto asset owners are not yet used to this kind of pressure. Criminals take advantage of these zones of inexperience. Plus, we are talking about big money. Hacking a bank to get funds is long and expensive, but with cryptocurrency, the economics of the attack often look more attractive for criminals. That is why the number of attacks is growing.”
