El Reno says Bitcoin mining facility may have operated unlawfully before water leak

EL RENO, Okla. (KOKH) — The City of El Reno is calling out that a Bitcoin mining operation may have operated unlawfully after a water line break at the site disrupted service to nearby businesses, city offices, and schools.

City officials said three million gallons of water were lost after a multi-day water leak on private property in the 800 block of W. Jensen Rd. Now officials say Athlon Blockchain LLC may have been operating illegally for three years.

Officials said a review of the property's records shows that the area was rezoned to Moderate Industrial in 2019. In October 202, Athlon Blockchain LLC submitted a Commercial Building Permit Application for the property. The city issued a permit and construction began.

In June 2023, the city issued a Stop Work Order after finding fire and life safety violations and expired building and electrical permits. The owner was given until December 2023 to obtain new permits, and operations were suspended until a Certificate of Occupancy could be secured.

City officials now say they believe Athlon Blockchain LLC continued operating without obtaining a Certificate of Occupancy.

After discovering the water leak, the property was condemned due to multiple code violations, according to city officials.
