Following this letter, OpenAI urges for a three-part course of action.

Firstly, the letter underscores a harsh reality for enterprise cybersecurity leaders: relying on the status quo is already a losing strategy. Corporate networks remain dangerously exposed through legacy technical debt, systemic misconfigurations and chronic under-patching.

For CISOs, this is a mandate to demand immediate, scaled-up budget and tooling.

Commenting on the call to action, CISO for 1Password Jacob DePriest says: “Every agent acting on someone's behalf needs a clear record of what it was authorised to do and what it actually did.

“Human-in-the-loop controls won't scale when agents are working across systems at machine speed. Security teams need identity security that governs agent access automatically and lets them step in when an agent exceeds its authority. That accountability, paired with automated defences, is how security teams will meet the challenge.”
