The cryptocurrency industry lost a collective $1.26 billion U.S. to hacks in this year's third quarter.

Crypto security firm CertiK says that the industry endured 247 security breaches between July and September of this year, with losses totaling $1.26 billion U.S.

Losses year-to-date now stand at $2.68 billion U.S.

September was the worst month yet in 2026 for hacks, with 99 incidents occurring, the most in a single month since February 2025.

In September alone, $768.5 million U.S. worth of digital assets were stolen from crypto exchanges, accounts, and digital wallets.

News of the escalating attacks on crypto comes amid a surge in asset prices, with Bitcoin (CRYPTO: $BTC) having risen 42% in the year's third quarter.

Investors also placed billions of dollars into exchange-traded funds (ETFs) that track the spot prices of Bitcoin and Ethereum (CRYPTO: $ETH) during the third quarter.

Why this matters

The scale and frequency of breaches indicate a broad security problem affecting crypto exchanges, accounts and wallets rather than an isolated incident. Continued losses could raise operational risk for investors and institutions, while signaling that stronger security controls are needed across the ecosystem.

However, the rally coincided with continued security breaches that damage crypto's reputation and lead many investors to avoid the asset class.

In its latest report, CertiK says that the third-quarter hacks spotlight how deeply rooted the security problems with crypto remain.

In a social media post, CertiK wrote: "With both losses and incident count reaching their highest levels of 2026, the month's data reinforces the need for security across every layer."

BTC is trading at $83,500 U.S. on Oct. 1.
